Elongase enzymes add 2 carbon atoms to the fatty acids to make them longer, so called elongation.
Desaturase enzymes add double bonds to the fatty acids to make them less saturated, so called elongation. There are different types of desaturase enzymes effective, depending on the location where to add the extra double bond (by removing hydrogen atoms). They can be called Delta 4, 5 or 6 in the human body but more different types are available in plants. To be able to function well they need certain vitamins (B's and C), minerals (Mg, Zn, Se) and insuline.
